Letter from Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi to the First Pilgrims of Paseo

18th April 2007

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Rev. John-Michael van Dyke has shared with me the very encouraging news of this first regional Paseo weekend.

I want to share three things with you:

1. I understand that team members and participants on this weekend retreat come from different Anglican churches that are part of the Common Cause movement. I want to commend you for this visible demonstration of unity - grounded in Scripture, centred on Jesus Christ, and focused on discipleship. In his high priestly prayer, Jesus prayed, "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (Jn 17.20-21). The movement of orthodox Anglicans in America needs this witness of practical unity that you have provided this weekend.
The non-believers in your communities need your witness of practical unity so they can know who Jesus is. As you come down off the mountain top of this weekend retreat, I appeal to you, as a matter of urgency, to "maintain this unity of spirit in the bond of peace." (Eph 4.3)

2. Secondly, I commend you for taking your own personal discipleship seriously. There is no greater question we must answer for ourselves than the one Jesus posed to his disciples, "Who do you say I am?"
Is Jesus just a prophet or teacher? Or, is he really the Son of the living God and the Lord and Saviour of the whole world, including your life and mine? Who is Jesus? Your answer to that question will set the direction for the rest of your life. Please do not go home from this weekend without resolving that question for yourself. The quality of your life today depends on it, and your eternal destiny depends on it.

3. Finally, I want to remind you that weekend retreats such as this Paseo weekend are not an end in themselves. They are the beginning of a new or renewed commitment to living your life not for yourself, but for Him who died for you and rose again.
Your life is not your own; you have been bought with a price. Your mission is to now live for Jesus Christ in every area of your life - your family, your marriage, your work, your ministry, and your commitment to participating in the fulfillment of Jesus' Great Commission to "make disciples of all nations." Do not be ashamed of the Gospel, for, as Paul says, "it is the power of God for salvation to all who believe." (Rom 1.16)

Brothers and sisters, what could be a greater "common cause" than what you have been doing this weekend, namely, making disciples? May the Holy Spirit blow through your churches and fan into a mighty fire a passion for living as disciples and for making other disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yours, in Christ,

The Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi
ARCHBISHOP OF CHURCH OF UGANDA.

Paseo Mission Statement
To walk with Christ and be as Christ for others; to offer Faith for those who seek it, Hope for those who need it, and Love for those who do not know Him; that everyone who walks with us may find He walks with them.

Paseo Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
we are Yours. Use us now for the sake of those whom You bring to this PASEO. May they find it to be the end of SELF-DOUBT, and the beginning of real PURPOSE, and may we help them claim Your Purpose in their life and make it their own. May it be for them the end of mere CONFIDENCE, and the beginning of a greater TRUST, and may we help them discover that life is not about what they are doing, but what You can do through them. May this time be the end of HOLDING ON and the beginning of LETTING GO, and may we help them find that those who surrender are those who triumph. Finally, may there be less and less of us, Lord, and more and more of You, and if there is to be a miracle in just one person’s life, help us to help make it happen
In Your Name we pray. Amen.
